How we’re fixing Queensland's missing middle

How we’re fixing Queensland's missing middle
THOUGHT LEADERSHIP 05 Mar 2024
We have a housing problem.

South-East Queensland's population is set to grow by two million people in the next twenty years, and we'll need over 850,000 new homes to keep pace. The traditional solution, detached, single-family homes, isn't working anymore. It leads to urban sprawl, puts pressure on our infrastructure, and takes up our precious green spaces.

We believe there’s a smarter way forward. It’s about focusing on the "missing middle": medium-density housing that fits into our existing inner-city neighbourhoods. This approach provides homes that are right for today's residents, from students and young professionals to growing families and downsizers.
We've already started. Projects like Ascot Row in Brisbane and Capri Villas on the Gold Coast are good examples of this kind of thinking. These low-scale, medium-density townhouse and villa developments are designed with real people in mind.

They feature smart floor plans, amenities, and communal spaces that meet the needs of diverse buyers. It shows you can build for a specific local market and still deliver quality housing.
"We’re really trying to move away from the extremes of urban sprawl and the high-density tower block... It’s about strategically addressing the missing middle... and allowing people to actually stay in their communities".

To make this happen on a wider scale, we need to work together. Collaboration between our industry and the government is the only way we'll create a sustainable and diverse supply of quality homes for everyone.
